Comp Highlight: £1500 TrickStuff Direttissima/Maxima Brakes + Rotors

April Comp Highlight: for only £6 you can win a pair of Trickstuff Direttissima Brakes + rotors - with global shipping included. You can read my full review here.

The lucky winner will receive a £1100 pair of Direttissima Brakes in a choice of silver or black, or the Maxima versions in silver/orange worth £1300! Both choices include a Trickstuff Bleed Kit worth £50 and any Trickstuff rotors worth up to £120.

The mythical brake set with a two-year waitlist! I finally managed to get my hands on two pairs of these German hyper-brakes: one-pair to give away and the other pair to go on my new Nicolai Nucleon test rig.

I tested these brakes five years ago when I worked at Pinkbike. You can read the full review on the PB site here. They were an amazing pair of brakes with a few small annoying issues with the lever band-clamp not working well and not having a tool-free reach adjust dial, shortly after my review these complaints were remedied by Trickstuff to make them even better.

Why are they so good? Well, they have a lot of interesting features and attention to detail from the PTFE-coated pistons that never seem to get sticky, 4 sealed bearings in each lever with an exceptionally light lever feel and the internal design that allows 100% perfect bleeding - Trickstuff claims that most brakes can only be bled to around 90% perfection, and it’s this lack of perfection that allows air to cause degradation problems meaning you always need to bleed them again at some point. The Trickstuff brakes, in theory, never need bleeding. This checks out as I never bled mine and I also checked with some insiders working on race teams using these brakes for entire seasons without touching them - this is essentially unheard of and some race mechs can be seen bleeding every day or even every run.

They offer massive power and modulation, great lever angle and throw, and come with Goodridge braided hoses as standard.

Are they better than my favourite Hope Tech4 V4s? Well, it’s been a while since I used them so would need to do some serious back-to-back testing, but I don’t think they can offer 2x the performance as they cost 2x the price of the Hope, maybe 10% better at most. Plus, you essentially cannot buy them which throws them out of the ring in my opinion, but makes them the perfect product to try and win for the price of a beer!
